It seems that parents have a tendency to do their thing while the children do their thing. I think we miss out on a lot by having "separate lives" (Phil Collins started running through my head). My husband is FABULOUS at including a child in his life. Maybe it's because he's blind and it's his nature to want a "helper". More than that, I think he's wise to introduce real life experiences to the children, teaching them skills and spending time with them as well.
Lately, our almost-12 year old son has been his shadow. Our son doesn't always enjoy every task he's included in, but overall, he soaks it up, asks questions and LOVES it. My husband is very technical - he is a radio broadcaster, software developer and technical consultant. He's teaching our son about computers and radio but sometimes there's grunt work involved, too.

Cable after cable after cable; wrapping and tying and organizing to prevent a tangled web. |

He actually liked this job - making a list of "giveaway" books for the radio show. |

This...is the ultimate: learning to run the radio boards, voice spots, setup equipment and MORE. |
Call them a gopher, a runner, a helper, a shadow, a partner, an apprentice, an assistant...whatever the title, round one up. It's nice having a right-hand man!
